2014 Closet Remix Challenge {Part 2}

You can read about the 2014 Closet Remix Challenge I’m doing here.

Days 11-20 were definitely tougher than 1-10 because I feel like I am picking the same thing to wear over and over. One thing that’s for sure… I like polka dots, gingham, stripes and color! Days 21-31 will most likely be the toughest.

Reading: The Blue Bistro by Elin Hilderbrand. I don’t know if it was the foodie in me but I really enjoyed this book! The author does a really good job explaining the food in such detail that you can almost taste it. Oh yeah, it’s a love story too.

Watching: SCANDAL! Thank you to my friend Michelle who got Adam and I completely hooked. We are actually paying for episode’s on Apple TV right now (which feels like an all time low) because we can’t get enough! Oh, and can we talk about how much I want Olivia Pope’s wardrobe? She always looks fabulous!

Screen-shot-2013-07-19-at-4.39.06-PM

Making:  Tonight we Adam is making meatloaf (pre-mixed from Whole Foods) and roasted potatoes and carrots. (I usually do the cooking but he has off!) It should last a few days!

Anticipating:  Adam’s birthday so i can give him his present!! He knows it’s a trip somewhere since he had to request the days off from work but has no idea where we are going yet. I CANT WAIT.

Learning:  To be patient. Remember those goals? It’s harder than I thought, but I’m learning…

Listening to:  The “new” Drake album. I might dress preppy but this girl loves R&B & Rap more than any other type of music.

Wearing:  Leggings, a loose sweater and flats. I’m almost positive I’m the only person at work today! (Closet remix Challenge post tomorrow)

Plotting:  my vacation days at work. I need lots of sunshine this summer! I think last year was the palest I’ve ever been since I was born.

Picture-17

Current wish list:  Oh, this whole no shopping in January has led to quite the list for “Buy in February”.

Current need: Right now? I need it to be 5 o’clock.

Current indulgence:  Popcorn! Kettlecorn to be exact. I am completely obsessed with it at the moment and eat it at least once, maybe twice a day.

bag_kettlecorn_wpopcorn

Current food: Sunflower seed butter is a new favorite. Try it, it’s surprisingly likable!

Current drink: This tea my hairstylist turned me on to. It’s DELICIOUS.

Current guilty pleasure: Chocolate chips straight from the bag to my mouth.

Enjoy-Life-Semi-sweet-Chocolate-Mini-Chips-575x297

Current nail color:  Some type of sparkly pinkish/red shellac. I will be getting them done sometime this weekend again.

2014 Closet Remix Challenge

Hi, my name is Alyssa and I’m a Shopaholic.

keep-calm-and-dont-shop-alice-in-nappyland-no-buy

As I mentioned yesterday, I am doing a Closet Remix Challenge on Instagram.  The idea of the Closet Remix Challenge is to encourage you to bust out the items in your drawers with tags still on them, dust off things you have forgotten in the back of the closet, and pair unexpected pieces to create fun new outfits, giving a twist on your trusted favorites. You cannot shop for clothes, shoes or accessories for the entire month of January. If you have a date night, no shopping. Wedding? No shopping. Vacation? No shopping!

closet remix

I’m sure you’re thinking, one month isn’t that hard.. But, it actually is {for me}. I don’t think I’ve realized how often I was just searching for something when bored and pressed the “buy now” button or how often I indulge in retail therapy when I’m having a bad day. But, I’ll make it through these 31 days and maybe even some of February. Below are my outfits for the first 10 days… If you want to know where anything is from just shoot me an email or leave a comment below.

I do enjoy this challenge because it is in line with my goal to spend less on shopping If you want to join in on Instagram just hashtag #2014closetremixchallenge or #30dayclosetremix.

Pack like a Pro!

Happy Friday! When the weather gets cold, we want OUT of NYC. I am headed for a weekend getaway in less than 12 hours and plan on packing extremely light. Lugging an over-packed bag is not fun – Plus, they charge for everything these days and I rather save my money to shop! Some questions to ask yourself:

  • What’s the weather going to be like?
  • Can I wear a piece more than once?
  • Will I need shampoo/toothpaste/blow-dryer or will the place I’m staying provide this at no charge? (<— big space saver!)

180

Once you have these 3 questions answered it’s time to start packing.

  • Make a list. This seems so simple but it’s extremely important in helping you stay on task. I write down the number of days I will be there, then pick a day & night outfit for each day.
  • Take pictures of your outfits. This helps me remember what I originally planned on wearing instead of looking at my clothes and thinking nothing goes together all of a sudden.

401

  • Be reasonable. Override that voice in your head trying to convince you that you absolutely need six pairs of heels for a three-day trip. You don’t…and the practical you knows that.
  • Don’t skimp too much. If you know that you’re going to a wedding with formal dinners planned every night, then yes pack a few extra dresses. The trade-off? Include a neutral-toned pair of ankle-strap sandals that go with each outfit, so you don’t have to overload on the shoe front.
  • Roll your clothes. First of all, it minimizes wrinkles and therefore you don’t have to worry about the quality of your hotel iron. Second of all, it frees up a lot of space for other traveling necessities.

12dfe381b551e253450308b2cde0d7eb

  • Don’t forget accessories. Pack a great belt, a pair of statement earrings, and a classic pair of flat sandals. When in doubt, these things will come in handy.
  • Adopt Kate Middleton’s recycled-outfit policy. Unless you’ve been out hiking all day, or rolling around in the sand, there’s a very good chance you can wear certain wardrobe pieces more than once in a single trip. If you first wore your sundress with a jean jacket and wedges, use it as a beach cover-up for the next 2 days.
  • Use bright, colorful tags to easily pick out your suitcase at the Airport. This tip will get you quicker to the warm beach and a cold drink.

Gift Guide: Girly Girl

The girly girl list was probably the easiest one I made because, well, I’m a girly girl. I own some of these items and would never turn down any of the others because they are all so fun!
 Gift Guide: Girly Girl

Drybar Blowout In A Box – If you’ve been to the Drybar you know they do amazing blowouts (if you haven’t – check it out!) I use their conditioner and love how light it is for my long hair.
Bar tool – I doubt Adam would ever let me keep these glitter coasters out for display but they would be fun for a girls party!
Birchbox 6-Month Gift Membership E-Card – $10 a month to receive a box full of beauty goodies. I have a bunch of reviews on my blog about this.
Crystal jewelry – Still loving gold so yes, I love this watch.
Necklace – Classic look with a touch of gold.
Tote bag – I get TONS of compliments on this Tory Burch bag… It is huge so I throw a ton in there and it has held up beautifully after toting it with me everywhere the past 365 days.
Cheek bronzer – Bobbi Brown has some classic makeup for women – I always go for bronzers that are multi-colored over solid.
Polaroid Polaroid Z2300 Camera Black – All girls love selfies
How to Walk in High Heels The Girl’s Guide to Everything  – A fun book for your coffee table or dressing room
Pajamas – I can’t sleep in pants and long sleeves because I get too hot in the night so these light weight jammies are perfect!
Monster Crystal Headphones in White – I personally don’t know if I would wear big headphones like this but I see a lot of people traveling with them and these are a pretty alternative.
Tech accessory – If I didn’t just buy a Lilly Pulitzer Ipad holder — I would’ve purchased this one! Kate Spade has been all over this list… One of my favorites!

My box:

photo 1 (2)

A little different from box number 1 (which was all colors) but, it’s Fall so I’ll accept the dark clothes. From first glance I thought I would love 3 things (blazer, dress & oversized sweater) but after trying on with my current clothes, I might be choosing less… We’ll see.

Item 1: Black and White Dress

photo (9)

I wanted to like this dress but it was a bit too big in the waist area. I liked the print, the semi-sheer black on the sides and the fit and flare style but this isn’t a dress that could be worn alone.

photo 2 (2)

I tried on a blazer and tightened up the waist with a skinny black belt. But I feel like you don’t see much of the dress with these items on… Hmmm…

Item 2: Chambray Shirt

photo 4 (1)

This chambray top was a little too baggy for my liking. The style of the shirt (since it was bigger) made it difficult to tuck in but I think maybe it could be cute with leggings, an infinity scarf and a pair of riding boots? I already own 3 chambray shirts so I’m almost positive I don’t need another one.

Item 3: Blazer (excuse my hair in these photos…it was 6am)

photo 1 (1)

It’s hard to tell but the blazer is grey and tan checkered. I don’t own many blazers but I think I would like this one if it had elbow patches. Maybe I could sew them myself?

Item 4: Boyfriend Fit Polka Dot Sweater

photo 2 (1)

I love me some polka dots! I thought this was the most versatile piece so I also paired it with a skirt.

photo 4

My favorite thing about this was it was long enough to cover my big booty

photo 3

Item 5: Black Sequin Tank

photo 5

I knew immediately when i pulled this out that I wouldn’t be a fan. I don’t really wear tank tops in the winter (even with a sweater/blazer over) and it looked baggy.

photo 1

I was right.

I haven’t purchased anything yet (I’m supposed to be doing a No Shop November) but I told Adam to help me make a decision after he sees this post. I felt like my personal stylist did an OK job this time but, my first box was still my favorite!

I’ll definitely try StitchFix a few more times and I recommend this fun way to “shop” to anyone who wants to try out some new things. The process was extremely easy and who doesn’t like getting presents in the mail!?

Getting My Fix (Stitch Fix Review)

I’ve been reading reviews about Stitchfix for a while now and figured it was finally time for me to check it out. I have never been great with Fall fashion and I’ve been loving my monthly subscription to Birchbox so why not?

So, what is Stitch Fix? Stitch Fix is a personal styling service. They get your style and size preferences, then send you a package of stylish goodies to try on at home. No two Fix™ shipments are alike. Each one is hand–picked just for you.

How does it work?

  2. Schedule a Stitch Fix Pick a date, and they will send you a box of 5 clothing and accessory items they have hand-picked just for you. Schedule monthly, or as often as you like—it’s your call. 5. Check Out Give Stitch Fix feedback on your shipment—their secret (styling) sauce gets better over time if we know what did and didn’t work for you

I opened my box and immediately saw something I love in clothes.

photo (20)

COLOR. I did write in my profile that I love that, so I’m glad they were paying attention. My personal stylist also sent me a note which made me feel like she was listening to my needs (wants).

The first item I tried on was the red ponte dress.

photo (15)

Love. Love. Love. This was my favorite item by far in the entire fix. The fit was perfect, the material is thick and this is an easy piece to transform from Summer to Fall.

photo (19)

Each item comes with 2 pictures on tips for styling. Which could be a bad thing? Now I want the clutch on the right and the sandals on the left… Yikes.

Item number 2 is a blue flower crystal necklace that I paired with the dress above.

photo (16)

I did like this necklace a lot…However, I have almost an identical one from J. Crew so it doesn’t make sense to have two.

Item Number 3 was the black and white design tank. The back was very soft, almost mesh-like material. But way nicer than mesh. Does that make sense?

photo (14)

photo (10)

I wanted to love this tank but I wasn’t digging the fit.. Too frumpy for me. Adam however, did like it a lot. So i tried it on with a blazer too.

photo (11)

It was OK. But I didn’t want to talk myself into liking something.

Item Number 4 was a green drawstring skirt.

photo (17)

Love the color and the fit but it was a little too long. Also, I didn’t feel like the material could transfer over to fall so I had to say no to this one.

photo (9)

My last item was an orange top with lace crochet detail. I love lace and I love the color orange!

photo (13)

photo (12)

I adored this top. The only problem is it was a bit baggy on the sides so my bra was hanging out. When I was 18 I wouldn’t have cared…But, now that I am nearing 30 (WHAT?), I decided against it.

I only ended up buying the red dress in this order but I felt like my personal stylist did an amazing job of finding “my style”. These looks are definitely something I could picture myself in day-to-day.

I’m definitely planning on doing StitchFix again (sorry, Adam) and recommend to anyone who wants to try out some new things. The process was extremely easy and I’m happy with the outcome.

What to Wear to a Summer Wedding

A post about summer wedding wear…in August! Whoops, a little late on that one.

I’m not sure about you, but I have a love-hate relationship with weddings. Every time we open our mailbox to a wedding invitation, I’m presented with a bit of a challenge. Is this a vineyard wedding? Black-tie affair? Does that mean short or long dress? Daytime or Night? Although, dressing for a summer wedding is a bit less challenging than a winter wedding, it still means the stress of finding the perfect dress.

Black Tie
Apart from a white-tie wedding (which I’ve yet to see someone have), black tie is the most formal dress code you’ll face. It’s customary to wear floor-length gowns and in the warm weather you should opt for chiffon, silk or cotton. At the bottom of this post, I have shown a green chiffon dress that would be perfect for the summertime.

1006116_869588565807_1283810869_n

You may also choose a shorter style for a summer black-tie wedding if the color palette is in the darker hue family. If you do wear a shorter dress, add some sparkle – in your shoes, on your neck, in your ears or with a beautiful clutch. Keep your hair and make-up classic. A favorite “treat” of mine is to enjoy a blow-out before a wedding.

528747_806648405009_286585140_n

Cocktail Attire
If a wedding calls for cocktail attire, there’s no need to reach for that gown—knee-length or slightly above works, but steer clear of anything too tight, flashy or pouffy. Think of it this way: Fun and festive is fine, but consider the type of dresses you’d want worn at your own wedding (a skin-tight sequin backless minidress? Probably not).

However, you should choose a short fun dress in a pretty print or vibrant color. You can experiment with necklines and lengths—this dress code is more flexible. Wear metallic strappy sandals and costume jewelry. Make it fun!

561583_736281920009_442507997_n

Afternoon Wedding
When it comes to daytime weddings, my mind always goes to Lilly Pulitzer. Not the traditional hot pink and green alligators all over your dress Lilly, more subtle muted light pink seersucker Lilly.

408371_733588013619_2129268151_n

Seek out dresses that are feminine and polished in a delicate floral print or a pastel color. Keep accessories clean and simple. This isn’t the time for the bling!

1001293_825953786869_213126751_n

Destination/Beach Wedding
Color! Color! Color! Print! Print! Print! Wear dresses in airy fabrics and fun patterns that compliment your skin tone for a beach wedding. To help capture the vibe, look to hues like cobalt blue, yellow, coral, and pink. When choosing jewelry, turquoise accessories are the perfect finishing touch.

Also, be sure to find out if you’ll be walking on grass or sand, and if so, ditch the heels and choose a festive pair of wedges or embellished flat sandals. Don’t forget your sunglasses!

480085_10200746010803989_1539725620_n

Also, if buying a dress for every occasion isn’t your thing, try renting! I’ve had TONS of success with Rent the Runway and highly recommend them. You may even see my face pop up on their website when browsing through the dresses 😉
